Photocopy Transfers: Remembering the Past and Embracing the Future
High school art teachers share successful unit plans that incorporate design thinking to help diverse groups of students facilitate a sense of place.  These students in Union City, Pennsylvania and Mandeville, Louisiana created mixed media photocopy transfers that reflect their community’s culture and heritage.  Students were given a design challenge to incorporate the history of their community by redesigning a public space or personal place. The layering effect of the photocopy transfer allowed students to select preexisting historic images to be used with their own original designs.  The result was a meaningful piece of art that helped students foster a sense of place and connection to their community and culture. Though these two schools are very different and located nearly 1000 miles apart, a common theme of pride and redesigned sense of place developed within both groups.
